Keeping Trees Plentiful in Turlock
This month’s interview is with Robert Hernandez, owner of R&D Landscaping and Tree Service. Based in Turlock, Robert has created a business plan that is integrated with sustainable landscaping practices. He believes that being green is a good way to build a successful, profitable business as well as help his customers add more value to their property. Robert’s company provides commercial and residential landscaping, tree removal, stump grinding, trimming, tree replacing, concrete work and underground construction work.
R&D Landscaping and Tree Service has developed a meaningful way to give back to the environment and to his clients. Robert has pledged that for each tree he removes, whether it is too old, too big, sick or dead, he will replace it with a tree better suited for our region’s climate and soil type, for FREE! When selecting a new tree, Robert suggests one that is drought tolerant and can develop a deep tap root. The tap root holds water to survive excessively dry periods as well as provide stability during windy times. He avoids trees that have shallow root systems, like redwoods, as they can cause sidewalks and hardscapes to buckle. Although redwoods are beautiful and majestic, they do require a lot of water during the dry summer months which can be expensive for the customer’s water bill and the tree can be stressed by the summer heat.
As trees absorb carbon, they assist in reducing greenhouse gases and slow down climate change. By choosing a philosophy of ‘right plant, right place’, water conservation is part of the equation. Turlock has been a part of the “Tree City – USA”, a program of The National Arbor Foundation for many years. The benefits of trees are numerous and we are grateful that R&D Landscaping and Tree Service is here to help Turlock stay beautiful, healthy and green.
